Deck Bed

Because this page does not appear on the drop-down menu, it has a green back button, lower right, to return you to the page from which you came. It also has a brown 'return to top' button which will appear as you scroll down.

The deck bed is basically under the oak tree, part in the home garden but mainly in the glebe land. It is bounded on the west by the yellow brick road and surrounds the deck on three sides, sloping steeply down to what will become river pond on the south side and is 92 m2 in area :

It is therefore mainly a shaded bed although some of it does get a bit of afternoon sun. The bed was created in the area where there was an overgrown hedge [complete with barbed wire fence] so there is some humus in the soil over the underlying clay and moisture is reasonable.

Final preparation and early planting could only start in late summer 2018 when the deck had been constructed. To some extent avid reading of Beth Chatto has guided the planting although in the sunnier parts of the bed it has been a case of 'where can we put this?' with plants 'rescued' from Chelsfield and plants bought in multiples not needed in the intended location. The western edge of the deck has been [dwarf] hedged with Japanese Holly [Ilex crenata] instead of box - which is now prone to blight and/or box moth and its caterpillars.

Full details of the plants can be found in the Deck Bed plant list and the context of this area within the garden can be found on the Plan and Areas page.
