Rockery

There is quite a drop from the level of the formal garden to the glebe land. The west side of the yellow brick road seemed an appropriate place to have a rockery to accommodate the drop :
It is shaded by the oak for most of the morning but then enjoys the sunshine as the sun moves round and is 40 m2 in area. There was only an overgrown, primarily holly hedge under-canopied with weeds and straggly grass here when we took over in 2015 so we spent the first two years trying to kill all of that. Once the Wealden sandstone rocks were placed we back-filled with good topsoil heavily laced with agricultural grit sitting on some rubble so it is rich but well drained soil.
Planting is now [2019] well under way with a range of rockery-scale trees and shrubs plus a mix of perennials.
The details of the plants can be found in the Rockery plant list and the context of this area within the garden can be found on the Plan and Areas page.
